Wonders never cease

We came home this morning from the United States. We spent a week with friends, Alison and Paul Hawke, in St. Louis. The four-wheeler was incomplete because our southern belle, Lara Ray, could not be with us. We spoke on the phone and that soothed my sorrow a bit. There is every good reason for me to travel once again to the USA. Number one will be to meet Lara in person.

The icing on the cake is that our apartment was sold while we were in St. Louis. The buyers just want us out by the 15th of August. Instead we don't finish the renovation. Sounds fair to me. We have only two weeks to pack everything and move out. We might be able to buy something else before that and even move in there. If not, it will be Hotel Mama again.

Home is where the heart is

I've never had such a big kitchen. It's empty, exept for the refrigerator that got re-plugged-in yesterday. The kitchen cabinets and the cooker are in our livingroom. The kitchen sink is outside, leaning exhausted to a wall. It will probably be replaced with a smaller one and better looking. Three windows were re-glazed today, two more tomorrow. Guess home is where the heart is.

Too much of a good thing

Some time ago the biggest telephone company in Iceland added to their services. Instead of the good old busy signal when you call someone who is already on the phone, there is a voice machine which says: "The number you have dialled is busy. You can order a connection when the number becomes available by pressing 5."

Of course it costs extra money to press 5. The voice just doesn't tell you.

This is overservice. This option is listet on the back of the phone book and I have used it unprompted by a machine when I really need to get someone on the phone. It's amazing though that it doesn't give any results when I call my doctor on his sceduled phone hour.

This could cause problems for people who don't speak icelandic. They might think that they have reached the private answering machine of the talkative person. They would probably wait for the beep, which never comes, and finally go hesitantly ahead and say what they need, believing they are leaving a message which the aledged receipient never gets. Naturally the caller will never have his phonecall returned and a multi million business deal is lost.

From scratch

I've slept in my own bed since Thursday night. You can't beat the feeling. I don't want to get out of it in the morning.

Just like I said I hardly knew where to begin when packing and stacking, I hardly know where to begin to put it all back. I suggested we blazed the place to ashes and started all over again. The only vote my suggestion got was my own.

The return of the Jedi
or
The attack of the Clones?

I'm back in with my mom and dad. No, I haven't divorced my husband. He came along. And it's only for three days. I want to believe it will only be for three days. The mason said his work would take four days. He started on Monday, a week ago. We hope he will finish tomorrow. Reminds me somehow of the heavenlies where a day is like a thousand years and thousand years are like a day.
