Prepare your conscious mind for a thrill
ride in electronic dance music — New York City's Supa DJ Dmitry is coming
to Hawai'i.
Dmitry, also known as Dmitry Brill, will
be the main act at "Scream," a Halloween party from 10 p.m. to 4
a.m. this weekend. It's happening at the China House in the Chinese Cultural
Plaza.
Brill's claim to fame came in the early
90s as a founding member of the dance-pop trio Deee-Lite.
Brill, Lady Miss Kier and DJ Towa Tei
managed to take the dance charts to another level. Deee-Lite produced four
albums and 11 No. 1 singles, including smash hits "Groove is in the
Heart" and "What is Love?"
Although Brill has played parties in the
Manhattan club circuit since the early 80s, he received worldwide attention
as a member of Deee-Lite.
He said he is thankful for the success
from his days working with Deee-Lite, but his sound has changed since then.
"My days with Deee-Lite is a point
of reference for a lot of people, but I'm not there anymore," said
Brill, who will make his return to the islands for the first time since
1996.
"The music I play is different from
Deee-Lite, which was more about positivity and happiness. My sound is a
much harder, tougher, techy sound," he added.
Since the trio parted in 1995, Brill has
ventured back into the underground club scene, playing at world-renowned
New York hot spots like Twilo and the Sound Factory.
With techno and house music being the
predominant favorites among Hawaii's electronic music listeners, Brill's
music is destined to be a success. Brill blends the two genres together,
taking the futuristic sounds of techno music and scattering it among swirls
of tribal and dance beats, without losing the funk element of house music
called Tech-house.
Brill's fresh DJ sound has kept him
flying around the world to engagements as far as Frankfurt, Berlin, Hong
Kong and Ibiza, Spain — the dance music capital of the world.
Brill has continued to make a name for
himself in the studio as well. Along the way, he has remixed songs for
Sinead O'Connor, Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers.
His current release includes a remix version of David Bowie's hit,
"Space Oddity."
Besides performing, Brill took on the
challenge of producing three tracks on his current album, "Scream of
Consciousness."
If Brill's sound was a musical painting it
would be filled with vibrant colors, as his tracks are a mixture of
high-intensity sound and creative musical effects.
"It's not a coherent one thought;
it's so many thoughts jumbled together to form a scream," said Brill.
"I believe in diversity — having
different sounds and not sticking to one type of music," he added.
Originally from Ukraine, Brill began
studying music at the age of six. His fascination with the club scene began
early in his life. He has
