Who other than my old, very old friend Ragga (Rags) would make a
universal "I recently found out about Friendship Tapestry on the Nordic Needle website and what a find! It was thoroughly enjoyable reading about the reason for the tapestry and all the letters about the pieces that were submitted already. Thank you so much for putting a link after each letter so one could appreciate the pieces one by one after reading the story related to it. I was so inspired by the other entrants designs and efforts that I just had to submit one too. In keeping with the theme of Friendship and peace I decided to do a Victoria Sampler Beyond Cross Stitch design. In the end I combined two of their designs to form the design that I would like to submit." Renee Wheeler, Botswana, Africa see Renee´s piece here May 2008 "What a truly wonderful project, what an inspiring idea. Thank you" Susan Bennett, Canada see Susan´s piece here March 2006 I have not added many letters lately as you can see. But here is one I received today: Hallo Rags,
I do hope that you had a most wonderful
time with your friends at Nordic Needle and that your return home will
be a safe one.
![]() I just could not resist sending you this
photo, because it touched my heart and I feel we can learn something
from this mother elephant helping her little one from the water because
he was slipping back into the water every time he tried to get out. She
helped him out and they continued on their way into the bushes and the
shade. The temperature at that time was very near to 42 degrees C. and
even we in the air-conditioned car found it VERY hot.
Our best wishes to you all and we will keep in touch. Marieta.

January 2006 Hello-2006 in New Zealand , I have just
found
this wonderful website as a new comer to the world of internet.
Just love
your idea and have spent ages viewing the wee pieces stitched by folk
around
the world. Please let me know if you are still continuing with this
project as I
would love to be part of it.
I live in Rotorua, New Zealand. Rotorua has a fairly large indigenous population, the Maori, hence we are a popular tourist area as there many ethnic type of entertainments and we also have hot springs and boiling mud, as well as geysers shooting up into the air. May peace be with you and the rest of the world as we enter another year Best wishes, Bev McLellan Rotorua, New Zealand October 2005 Mother Earth is in a rather bad mood these days. There are many people; our brothers and sisters that we need to pray for. The latest is the terrible earthquake in Pakistan and surrounding countries. Contact your local Red Cross or other relief organisation to donate money, if you can. But we can all remember them in our prayers. September 2005 friendship tapestry? Noone! She
has a very special big heart and
plenty of love to share. I am
proud and very lucky to have such a
friend. Therefore I meant to make
such a special contribution to her
idea that I have still not
finished it!!! I know she will wait
patiently for it... and I know I
should just plunge into it.
I hope the tapestry will keep on
growing and will travel around the
world, and Ragga (Rags) with it!
September 2005 The Katrina victims are unique in
the history of this country. No one has ever seen a tragedy like
this, and there is no way to comprehend how a community could exist one
rainy morning and, as in thecase of some of the small towns further to
the east of New Orleans, simply not be there the next day. There
are no fingers to be pointed, no blame to be laid at anyone's door for
the lack of preparation or response. This enormous storm and
ensuing tragedy has simply happened. It is likely that relief
efforts will go on for years in the American Gulf, because the entire
area will have to be rebuilt, and people who have been born and raised
there have been dispersed to far places for help. The people and
the Gulf Coast communities will certainly need support in the
future. So, efforts to help that are well-planned rather than the
instant, knee-jerk reaction that many of us feel, is probably the
better way to help, in the long run.
Love
Nancy USA We have some tapestry
friends in the hurricane disaster area and of course all the other
people affected. We just want you to know we are all praying for you
every day. We may have all kinds of faiths but we each pray according
to our own faith for help and strength to you all.
With love and friendship
thoughts from the bottom of my heart
God bless you all

Greetings from southeastern Pennsylvania in the United States of America. :-) I am sending you a small piece of myself in this needlework, as I designed this tiny band sampler just for the Friendship Tapestry. While the stitches themselves may have no particular significance, I picked my facorites plus some unusual ones and stitched them onto fabric that I hand-dyed myself. I´m happy to be able to share my love of needlework with so many other people who have the same interests. Thank you so much for coordinating what is sure to be an incredible and beautiful piece of artwork, crafted by the hands of so many loving people around the world. I feel honored to be able to be a part of this accomplishment. It has been amazing to watch all of the pieces as they have come in and you have posted them onto your website. I hope that you will take some pictures of the final tapestry once it has been woven together so that we can see all of the separate pieces joined together as one - the entire world united in harmony. Thanks again for your efforts! Jenna Magee Pennsylvania USA (see her work) May This piece is a single part of my last
summer´s garden here in New Zealand. I love the faces of the different
pansies and poppies and it reminds of all the different people in the
world. We are all so different and yet we are the same. I.e. we have
eyes, ears, arms and legs etc. However we are still different, like the
flowers that grow all around the world.
With this in mind I have made my piece around the faces of the flowers. The four flowers are real and I picked them from my garden in January and then I have ironed them into a fabric sandwich with visofix. Over the top I have placed a blue green see-through material. Stitches used are chain stitch, whipped stem, French knots and long and short stitch. If you look carefully into the larger purple pansy you will see the streaks of whitey silver in the petal, some of which I have tried to highlight with silver thread. I enjoy doing this kind of free embroidery alond with other disciplines when I have the time to spare. Elaine Welford Timaru South canterbury New Zealand (see her work) May Hi, my name is Niki and I'm writing this from
Italy.
I am Japanese and I have been living away from
my country since 1989.
I heard about your wonderful project about a
month ago on the site of "Nordic Needle" and I visited your site.
Your project is so fascinating and I wanted to
be the part of it.
I finally finished my piece and mailed it
yesterday, May 20th.
I hope it arrives before the deadline.
In my stitching I wrote "Per gli amici " with
beads.
That means " For friends " in Italian.
Since I live in Italy, I wanted to add some
touch of Italy.
I will continue to visit your site to see the
future development and I am looking forward to see a lot of pieces to
arrive !!
Good luck !!
Love,
Dear friends from all
over the world!
Hello! I´m Jackline, from Lavardine - France. I´ve learned how to "patch", only three years ago. So, I´m not a "pro"! But I made this little "piece of Friendship" with all my heart, because I love the ideas your movement represents: Friendship and Peace between all the women of the world - (and men too!!) I´m 73 - and I lost my beloved husband Jack, nine years ago. A friend of mine, Colette, seeing me always depressed, insisted to take me to a "Patchwork -class" WOO .....!! I fell in the "cauldron"! And thanks to her, I have great pleasure in doing it - and I can please my daughters and grand daughters with home made presents. Bravo! and love to you all Jackline (see her work) May Dear Ragnhildur,
In this little needlework, I did try to put a little piece of my heart. Thank you for giving me the happiness of taking part in this "Friendship Tapestry", it´s a real and great pleasure. Friendship has no borders, as it´s warmth and light smooth them out. When watching the tapestry displayed on your site, I think of all the hands, those of both women and men who worked for it all, hands in hands, up there, in your beautiful northern island. Many thanks again and see you soon on your website. Sincerely Giséle Lavollee France (see her work) April Hi, all the embroidery
friends of the world!
From far afield in South Africa, I greet you all, with my contribution for the Friendship Tapestry quilt. I think it is a wonderful chance to show everybody that people of all countries in the world can work together to make something worthwhile. I am sending a piece of embroidery of the national flower of South Africa namely the Protea of which there are many different varieties. The other piece is traditional beadwork that the African women have been doing for many years, first for decorating their clothes but now many of them do it in different ways to create an income to support their families. The key holder is one of the most popular versions of the national flag of South Africa that are sold on street corners or at informal trading places and in curio shops. Currently we are in our Summer time and have temperatures of up to 40°C, 104°F which might be as strange to some of you as temperatures of sub zero are to us! Kindest regards to all of you from me and my family! Marieta Purchase Centurion South Africa (see Marieta´s work) (see the work of Marieta and friend) April As a relative newcomer to
the world of needlecrafts, I´m learning to choose stitches, colors and
designs that "speak" to me. As a former writer and editor, I like to
find just the right words to express my ideas and feelings. And as an
avid crossword-puzzle-solver, I especially enjoyed combining my
interests for this piece of the Friendship Tapestry. I call it
"Solving the Puzzle of Peace and Friendship".
Thanks for the opportunity to share these thoughts with so many people. Becky Williams Kentucky USA (see Becky´s piece) April Dear Rags, In my childhood memories there where times when I would visit Grandmas, Aunties, Cousins, and other family members and friends, only to be fascinated by watching busy hands Weaving, Tatting, Knitting, Crocheting, Lacemaking, Whittling, Blacksmithing, Basket Weaving, etc. Some have gone on, but the rich heritage lives on as we teach and pass on the old and new ideas. I taught my 10 year old niece Hardanger. After she got the hang of it, she said, "Ters, how come it is called hardanger? It's fundanger!" It is so very gratifying to go to your website and view all the beautiful Friendship Tapestry squares from everywhere! Thank you very much for this opportunity! Terri Bloomquist Minnesota USA (see Terri´s piece) April I designed this filet crchet heart after researching this technique on the Internet, specifically for this tapestry. I wanted to make a heart to symbolize love between women all around the world. We are the nurturesrs who pass love on to the next generation. My passion is cross-stitching and embroidery, but I also enjoy crocheting, knitting and sewing. I love to share my skills with others to pass the love of needlework on to others. Liz Garrison Indiana USA (see Liz´s piece) Dear Ragnhildur,
I´m a crazy quilter. I think crazy quilting shows how life is in reality: a little bit of this and a little bit of that; fabric full of memories, stitched with the heart, feelings and love. Our needles don´t go for pain - our needles are friendship, all over the world, needlework is friendship, also the title of my little work for the tapestry. Hope you will enjoy Happy quilting Bea Galler Germany (see Bea´s piece) April Hello Ragnhildur,
Thank you so much for joining all of us together in this wonderful way. When the tapestry is complete, all of us will magically become friends! What a great idea! Here is a verse I came up with this morning: Peacefullness is something we learn Every time we behold nature´s miracles... Appearing in every blossom, Causing us to stand in wonder, Entreating us to treasure the Earth. Let PEACE begin with me... I believe peacefulness can be learned... and let it begin with me - Karen Olson Minnesota USA (see Karen´s piece) April Dear Ragnhildur,
I am sending you my little piece for the Friendship Tapestry. It is "The little Mermaid", from Copenhagen. Here in 2005 is the 200 years birthday of the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, it is celebrated everywhere, with "Hans Christian Andersen´s Ambassadors", from all over the world. His stories connect people from everywhere and they are translated into languages from all over the world. People are reading the stories to their children and they are unforgetable. Therefore I felt it was obvious to use one of his stories as my theme. Good luck with the tapestry Best regards Lone Holm-Jensen Denmark April Hi Rags,
Here is my contribution
to the Friendship Tapestry. I would like to dedicate my piece to my
best friend Laura who first introduced me to cross stitch in 1990. I
never would have tried it without her encouragement. It is appropriate
that my piece is a stitched angel. Laura died in a car accident in 2000
at the age of 44. I still feel her with me and thank God for putting
her in my life.
I thank you and your friends for coming up with the idea for the tapestry. It is wonderful to share this hobby with people all around the world. May God bless all who contributed. Happy stitching! Joan Reilly-Bertsch New Jersey USA April I´m a fiber artist and teacher and I heard about your tapestry from one of the ladies taking my class in stumpwork, Sharon Maich. I thought it was a wonderful way to connect to other people who love needlework and I was delighted to be able to contrubute something. I´m sure seeing the outouring of love in all those pieces must have warmed your heart. Best wishes, Sherry Del Rizzo Ontario Canada (see Sherry´s piece) April Komdu sæl aftur Ragnhildur
Hér kemur mitt framlag í vinátturefilinn. Það er fróðlegt að sjá hvað það er mikil fjölbreytni í bútunum sem eru komnir á netið. about the ladies who formed this project, and thought it was a
wonderful idea.
Who better to ask to partake in such an adventure than friends? I have
collected 17 beautiful crazy quilt blocks to be tied to the tapestry
and join
in the spreading of world wide friendship. An article appeared in
CQMagonline,
and a follow up article with photos will appear in the April issue. We are all
excited to be a part of this project. Rags, Nancy and Susan, it was a
treat to
be allowed to donate blocks as a group for this fun and wonderful
project. Good
luck and may treasured friendship always be yours. (see the 17 pieces from Crazy Gathering in

March Hi, my name is Carol Wold and my daughter, Roz Watnemo is co-owner of Nordic Needle in Fargo, North Dakoda. I have heard about your Friendship Tapestry project and both my husband, Lloyd and I have made a piece for the tapestry. I hope they will be acceptable. kind to let me know when it has reached you
so that I can be sure that you and everybody else working on this
fantastic
project will know that we here in South Africa share your love of
needle work
and the idea of Friendship overcoming all boundaries and languages. With
friendship wishes to all joining you in this project, I am going to
greet you in

excited about creating /
designing / and finishing up my piece. As I write this, it is on
it's way
to you. The idea that this is being sent to Iceland, and that
others from
around the world are also contributing is just so inspiring and
exciting.It
was certainly a piece that came
from my heart. I put my love into it as well as thinking of my
family and
friends. It is the smallest quilt I have ever made, and it has
the
biggest meaning.I look forward to the finished tapestry and hope that I
can get
a glimpse of it in person. Cinde Fincke March Dear Ragnhildur, I am Carol J. Fisher, age
77, from West Bend, Wisconsin in
the USA. My piece for your tapestry is an origianl design in hardanger.
I have
been sewing and embroidering as long as I can remember, my mother
taught my
sister and me to be busy all the time darning or sewing. Every time we
were
given money for a deed we did for a neighbor or as a reward, we would
buy
stamped needlework and embroider. These pieces were then put in our
hope chests
for when we got married. I have 3 children, 2 sons
and a daughter who shares my
love skills for sewing and needlework; 5 grandchildren and 8
great-grandchildren, 7 boys and 1 girl. We will be blessed with another
great-grandchild in April. My husband Albert and I have been married
for 58
years. I am a rosemaler on wood
and china and studied with Norwegians when they
were in America and knitting Norwegian sweaters is my specialty. I have
made so
many, I didn´t keep a record. I supply hardanger to a Norwegian museum
in
Pennsylvania where Ole Bull tried to start a colony in 1865 and have
made
hardanger church linens. These are all original designs and include
covers fro
the vessels for communion and an altar cloth 118 inches long with the
lace 10
inches wide. Took me from the beginning of December to the middle of
March to
do this, working 3 to 6 hours a day and I worked on nothing else during
that
time and missed only 2 days. I heard about your
tapestry from the ladies at
Nordic Needle and am privileged to be a part of this project. My
daughter
Laurel and I belong to the Badger Chapter of the Embroidery Guild of
America. I
will be watching your internet website for my contribution. Hopefully
you will
receive many pieces. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this. (click here to see Carol´s piece) March It is with great pleasure and gratefulness, that I send my piece fro the Friendship Tapestry. I am so proud of you and how you are promoting world friendship through the hands of needleworkers around the globe. I am humbled to think that Sue and I had something to do with the inspiration for this project. I am so excited to see the finished project and hopefully have it on display at Nordic Needle for others to see and appreciate. Many will be in awe of the concept that people from all over the world worked together to create such a thing of beauty out of the goodness of their hearts, work of their hands, in the name of friendship. With friendship and love, Roz Watnemo Minnesota www.NordicNeedle.com (click here to see Roz´s piece) February 28th Dear Rags,
Dear Rags, Caren Jesus Victoria Japan February
9th 2005 I've been following with interest the
progress of
the tapestry and enjoyed looking at all the pieces that have arrived so
far. I
was inspired to plan and execute a piece of my own and put it in the
mail this
morning from New Mexico, USA, to you. I spent several enjoyable days planning,
stitching, and thinking of thefriends who have transformed my life and
in whose
honor I was stitching. I look forward to watching the tapestry
grow and seeing
it in its finalstages as you assemble and display it. Maybe, if
you bring
it anywhere near me, I will even get to see it first hand. If
not, I am
glad for the opportunity to participate and observe the project's
fulfillment. Thanks. Louise

Greetings from cold
Minnesota, USA! I discovered your
inspired idea for the
Friendship Tapestry from the Nordic Needle newsletter, and have started
a piece
for you. It's counted thread cross stitch, my favorite needle art
(among many!)
My question comes from having seen the photo on your website of the
first piece
you received. It's horizontal....my piece is vertical. Will this matter? (it
does not matter... Rags) I pieced
together a large memory quilt for my mother's 80th birthday two years
ago. I
sent out over 100 blank squares of fabric to anyone who I knew had
touched my
mother's life in some way. I'll never forget the excitement when I,
too,
recieved the first envelope in the mail!! 90 squares were returned, and
each
was so individual and unique. What a privilege it was to assemble for
my
mother, and how touching it was to see her tears of joy when she opened
the
box! What I could never have known then was that the first person
memorialized
on that quilt was my beloved 22-yr. old son, Nick, who was tragically
killed in
a car accident on Feb. 7, 2003, when he lost control of his car on an
icy road.
He had chosen a favorite photo of himself with his grandmother (my
mother) for
his contribution to the quilt, and had written around the photo in
permanent
ink: "To Grandma... Thank you for sharing your love of family, of
music,
of God, of me." No words can describe the deep meaning and feeling in
each
and every one of those quilt blocks for my mother. I'm such a firm
believer in
the needle arts and in the spirit of the heart that they can convey. I
wish you
the best of luck with your project, and am certain that the tapestry
will be
larger than you ever dreamed it might be!! Blessings January

Dear Ragnhildur/Rags thank you for your e mail
and photo, it is so wonderful to
receive, I am glad you like my token of friendship, I think the
Friendship
Tapestry is such a wonderful idea, using the lavender in a
heart is part of my work, the
lavender grows in my parents garden, my father planted it many years
ago before
he passed on in 1992, whenever I use it I think of him and know he is
pleased
it is still growing and bringing pleasure, when I moved to the Outer
Hebrides
in 2000 I 'discovered' Harris Tweed, it is hand-woven and only made on
the
Outer Hebrides, it is such a beautiful fabric, I love it, I am not a
weaver and
admire people who can weave, I started making little
heart shapes filled with the
lavender to sell to visitors to the islands, then last year I joined a
group of
textile artists to exchange textile postcards and when thinking of a
design for
my postcard, I designed it with the Harris Heart so the recipients
would have a
real little piece of britain, my parents garden is in the south of
England, when I saw your
Friendship Tapestry and wanted to join,
while thinking of a design I realised that the 6 x 4 format is the same
size as
the textile postcards and thinking that 'friends' often calm our nerves
and
love us, Lavender is calming and the heart symbolises love, so I
thought it
appropriate to make a friendship tapestry lavender Harris Heart, Frances Caple

2005 I'm writing this during
an ice and snowstorm here in cold Rochester, Minnesota, USA. In the
next few days, we'll be lucky if the temperature rises above zero
degrees (F). In fact, it's supposed to be 21 degrees below zero
tomorrow. So I thought, what perfect weather to snuggle down in my warm
house and stitch something for the Friendship Tapestry! It will
probably be hardanger as that's my favorite and what my Norwegian
ancestors did. I think this tapestry idea is a wonderful thing, the
world is getting so much smaller, but it's so fun to be a part of
something that others love as much as I do. Keep warm-- Jan. 10th

Hi Rags, Have just read the NN
Newsletter, and what a wonderful idea to have a friendship tapestry. Carole Wade Nov.24th 2004 Dear Rags, Nancy and Susan I have just finished visiting your website and am overhwhelmed at the idea of a Friendship Tapestry. (I heard about it from the Nordic Needle newsletter). I too have often marvelled at the wonderful friendships I have made since I discovered the Internet, several years ago. I have made the very best of friends from all over the world, who are into needlework the same way I am. I have been lucky enough to meet some of these wonderful friends, but there are many more who I haven't met, but just know that they will be friends forever. I would like to let a group called the VSCyberstitchers know about this tapestry. We are a group of women who came together after doing cyberclasses at The Victoria Sampler website (situated in Canada). This is a wonderfully supportive group from all walks of life who, I'm sure, would like to participate in this amazing project. There are probably about 150-200 active members in this group so you might have an avalanche response of tapestry squares! Perhaps you will have to make several tapestries by the time you have finished! Thank you for thinking up this wonderful idea. Hugs Nov. 24th

idea! I am always blown away by what stitchers come up
with. Don't know why, but I am. We, as a group, are always
coming up with new ideas and ways to help others. I think the
tapestry is a wonderful way to encourage others to be a friend as well
as to participate in some kind of needlecraft. Thanks! Melissa Harger Nov. 23. 2004 Hæ, hæ Ragnhildur, Bestu kveðjur Veiga (Rannveig

2004 I was wondering if the
format was going to be portrait or landscape. I have an idea for a
square! Jane from Illinois Nov. 23rd
2004 Thank you for the invitation to join your wonderful project. Like Anya, I will have to decide what to incorporate in my piece. But with a 4 day week end for Thanksgiving I'll surely get a good start. Shay

2004 Hi, I saw the article in
Nordic needle about your project, and immediately got excited about
it. What a wonderful idea. You can count on me for a piece for your project. Sandy Nov. 15th

This is
wonderful, and OF
COURSE I will participate!!!!!! My only concern is choosing which
medium I want to use, as I have way too many favorites! Maybe I
will try to be like Ragnhildur and combine all of my favorites into one
piece. Hmmmmm…..interesting! My hat is
off to the
three of you for getting this project started. I feel exactly as
you all do, and when I am not stitching, I am reading about it…or
writing about it! I am really looking forward to this. Anya Gray, |
