Michael Lohr is professional writer/music journalist, musician/lyricist and European history scholar/folklorist. Musically speaking, Michael is an advocate of World, Bluegrass, Country, Western, Folk, Baroque, Renaissance, Americana, Classical, Opera, Classic Rock and Heavy Metal music. He is an active, voting member of the Country Music Association (CMA), International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA), Americana Music Association (AMA), Western Music Association (WMA), the Academy of Western Arts (AWA), Roots Music Association, the Folk Alliance, the Academy of Ancient Music, International Society for Contemporary Music, International Association of Music Information Centres and the World Music Institute. He is an Associate member awaiting full membership confirmation with the Academy of Country Music (ACM).

He is a regular music contributor to Cowboys & Indians, Bluegrass Unlimited, Acoustic Guitar and Celtic Life. His writing has appeared in such diverse magazines as Country Music Weekly, Performing Songwriter, Acoustic Musician, Guitar Player, Guitar World, Condé Nast Traveler, National Geographic Travel, Lost Treasure and The Economist, to name a few. He has written for several music magazines including Classic Rock and Mojo in the UK and Dirty Linen, Global Rhythm, Relix and Creem in the US. He has had a few dabblings published in Esquire as well as in several international editions of Rolling Stone. He’s also contributed to various local and regional newspapers throughout the world. His journalistic endeavors have been published in 38 countries and have been translated into 31 languages, including Icelandic, Welsh, Italian, Hebrew, Russian, Romanian, Croat, Danish, Latvian, Estonian, Lithuania, Bulgarian, German, Japanese and Spanish.

He is a member of National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and an active, voting member of the Rodeo Historical Society. He is a contributor to Persimmon Hill, the Journal of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and also currently assisting the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame with several research projects.

He was a co-editor and project leader of the Beyond Borders Press/Lorenzo Press anthologies The Book of Hope and The World Healing Book; global anthologies of dialogue among nations. These collections contain poetry, essays and artwork from many diverse international artists and spiritual leaders including, His Holiness The Dalai Lama; Rabbi Michael Lerner, Sufi Master Muhammad Zuhri, former US Poet Laureate Rita Dove, poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, members of the Coptic Christian Church of Egypt, members of the Poetry House of Morocco and the Icelandic musical group Sigur Rós. He is currently Senior-Editor-At-Large and member of the Board of Directors for Beyond Borders Press with offices in Reykjavík, Iceland and Bay of Islands, New Zealand. In July 2002, he participated in the UN-sponsored, Icelandic Public Television special, Poetry On The Peaks, held on Mt. Esja and Snaefellsjokull. This special was rebroadcast in America on Link TV.

He is a contributing author to the 2004 UEFA Euro Cup Tribute anthology, released to coincide with the 2004 Euro Cup football games in Portugal. He also assisted with research for the ESPN the Magazine projects, ESPN College Sports Encyclopedia and the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia. He is a frequent Bocce player and when it comes to European football, he supports the German and Italian National teams in World Cup play, in German Bundesliga he supports VfL Wolfsburg, FC Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart, and in the Italian Lega Calcio Serie A his favorite team is AC Milan. American College football-wise, his favorite team is the University of Texas Longhorns.

He previously served as an editor for bestselling British author Storm Constantine’s speculative entertainment magazine, Visionary Tongue. He has also written for various “pro” rated genre magazines around the world including; The Internet Review of Science Fiction, The New York Review of Science Fiction, Paradox, Strange Horizons, Cemetery Dance, Brutarian, City Slab, Dark Discoveries, Dark Wisdom, Aeon Speculative Fiction, The Pedestal Magazine, Asimov's Science Fiction, Interzone and Albedo One. He serves as the resident staff journalist for the dark pop culture magazine, Withersin. He’s also a regular contributor to professional genre magazines published in France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Sweden and South Africa. He is a ‘journalist-at-large’ with Science Fiction South Africa and is the US Correspondent with the largest genre-based French language magazine in the world, SF Magazine. His favorite genre novelists are Storm Constantine, Terry Goodkind, Douglas Clegg, Graham Masterson, Anne Rice, Douglas Adams (R.I.P.) and Dean Koontz.

He is an accomplished guitarist, mandolin and dulcimer player and has a serious bent toward Bluegrass, Country, Western and Americana music (Little Big Town, The Del McCoury Band, Gillian Welch, Crooked Still, Larry Stephenson Band and Old Crow Medicine Show, to name a few). He also loves world music in its many forms; Loreena McKennitt, Tannahill Weavers, Azam Ali (be it solo, or with Vas & Niyaz), Salif Keita, Babatunde Olatunji, Baaba Maal, Yothu Yindi and Sevara Nazarkhan, being his favorites. He also loves the music of The Album Leaf, Enigma and Stevie Nicks. His favorite form of rock music is heavy metal in all its many incarnations European Symphonic, Prog, Viking, Battle, Thrash and Power (HammerFall, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Dream Theater, Tool, Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Megadeth, Metallica, Black Label Society, etc)!

As for other guilty pleasures: His top five favorite movies are Oh Brother Where Are Thou, Gladiator, Braveheart, Wanted and Contact. Kingdom of Heaven, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Blood Diamond get honorable mentions, as does the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He enjoys the Stargate television series and its many incarnations; SG-1, Atlantis and Universe as well as Amanda Tapping’s Sanctuary. He is also particularly fond of the animated series, Metalocalypse. From a libation perspective, he enjoys Mexican Beer: Dos Equis, Pacifico, Tecate and Corona as well as Peroni, the best beer in all Italy, if not Europe. Want ambrosia of the gods? He has a passion for archaeology, ancient history and mythology and has participated in archaeological excavations around the world in conjunction with several organizations including the Halle Institute of Archaeology in Bonn, Germany, the Romanian Institute of Cultural Memory, the Barcelona Archaeological Institute and the British Museum.

He serves as an Associate Board Member for the African Conservation Foundation (African Conservation Foundation). The African Conservation Foundation won the 2006 Stockholm Challenge Award for its African Conservation Network program for cultural and environmental preservation projects in Tanzania.
